1983-88 CATHEDRAL OF ST.JOHN THE DIVINE NYC

The Cathedral Garden

Founder/Directors: an intensive/organic Vegetable and Herb Garden developed as a urban model to supply fresh food to a Soup Kitchen and Mens' Shelter. Solar Greenhouse built by volunteers for starting seedlings for year-round production. Programs included:

  • Neighborhood Kid Corps
  • Garden and Nature Classes:
    • for 6th and 7th graders at Cathedral School
  • Neighborhood Gardening Classes:
    • Grosevenor Neighborhood Settlement House, hands-on work with children and their families from seed to harvest.
  • Work Program: Manhattan Valley Youth Outreach
    • Work skills with Foster Care program

Dunham Memorial Gardens

Design and Installation of 20,000 bulbs and perennials around the borders of the one-acre pulpit green in the center of this 13-acre urban setting.

1984-96 THE LOTUS GARDEN NYC

Founders/Designers: designed with funding from developer Wm. Zeckendorf Jr., The
Lotus Garden is a 7000 sf community garden sited on the second story rooftop of a luxury condominium's parking garage. A precedent setting urban land trust with ponds, structures and more than 300 species of perennials, trees and shrubs. Widely visited, hailed as
"a New York treasure", included in many guidebooks.

1985-94 THE LOEB BOATHOUSE Central Park, NYC

Design and Development of 1500 sf. English Perennial Gardens and outdoor restaurant in unique setting for luncheons dinners, weddings and other events on the Lake in Central Park. Also seen by strollers from the Ramble.

1982-87 URBAN BIOSHELTER PROJECT NYC

Founder/Directors: a research and economic development initiative for localized urban food production on rooftops. Model gardens; Solar greenhouse design; Lightweight soil modeling and development; Bldg.Codes research. Precursor to much of current Green Roof movement.

1987 UNION and JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARIES NYC

Biblical Gardens ----- Designs for unique gardens to be built within the Broadway Malls from 121st to 123rd streets. Based on plants from Biblical literature, adapted for N. American climate zones.

1987 THE GREAT HALL at SNUG HARBOR Staten Island, NYC

Design for restoration of grounds around this historic structure which is now part of the S.I. Botanic Gardens

1987 CHRIST AND ST. STEPHENS CHURCH NYC

1990-91 THE BLIEBTREAU (the EDGECOMB) Harlem, NYC

Design and installation of gardens surrounding restored Harlem Mansion as permanent housing for homeless persons (for Broadway Housing Development Fund Co.)

Design, development and maintenance of gardens at (2) Merritt Pkwy entrances in Greenwich {also a pilot project for the Merritt Pkwy Conservancy}

Planning and Design for small park in front of newly constructed Library building, along with Landscape Gardens for Library. Perennial gardens along brook installed with volunteers from Westchester-Fairfield Hort. Soc.
